Hey Fangirls. Today we’re going to talk about a mildly unconventional villain, SAD. SAD stands for Seasonal Affective Disorder; a serious and dangerous disorder that many people suffer from.
Basically, SAD is exactly it’s acronym. Scientifically, it’s a lot more than that. During the winter months (especially in the North East), the days grow shorter and colder. That leads to people doing one of two things; going outside for short periods of time, or not going outside. When people are outside, they soak up the sun’s rays in the form of Vitamin D. Vitamin D makes you happy.
So when we’re outside less, or not at all, we get less sun. Less sun means less Vitamin D, which in turn means less happiness. This extreme shortage of Vitamin D causes us to be significantly less happy. And when you’re less happy, you (usually) do a couple things.
You go outside even less. That means you’re getting even less sun, less D, and less happiness. It’s really a downward spiral. I know when my SAD is really bad, I eat way more. That’s why many people gain winter weight; they get depressed and stop going outside, start eating. It’s really difficult to control, but that doesn’t mean there is no way to combat it.
Go outside. I know it’s cold, I know it’s wet and awful, but do it. And the best way to keep warm? Exercise. By doing those two things, you’ll make your winter a little better. Walk around the block every day. If you’ve got a dog, take them with you. Dogs love movement, of any kind. I walk to and from the bus stop. It’s about 15 minutes each way, I can bundle up and plug in my headphones, and I’m ready to go.
If that doesn’t work for you, there is something called light therapy. That’s sitting under a certain type of light for an amount of time. These “happy lamps” help you in getting the D, and make you feel better. Lauren Lopez of Team Starkid uses one. The downfall is that they’re quite pricey.
This is one of my biggest villains. I’m working on getting up to do exercises in the morning to make myself be more active throughout the day. I’m limiting the foods I put in my body. And I’m trying to walk more. I read that if you take your problems, and personify them as villains, you will find your strengths, and then can eventually overcome them. That’s my goal with SAD, and eventually depression. Both are huge villains that seem impossible to overcome, but I’m working on it.
