Villain Chat: Red Mist / The Motherfucker

Fangirls! This week, I realized it was about time that we talk about one of my least favorite villains. He’s only one of my least favorites because he’s an asshole and a jerk and I don’t find him as likable as so many other bad guys. But, he’s a pretty damn good villain, because I find the Motherfucker to be pretty damn terrifying.

Before the Motherfucker, there was Red Mist. Red Mist was a superhero who came out of the many inspired by Kick Ass in his beginnings in the first volume of his story. Red Mist is Chris Genovese, son of John Genovese, a big time mobster. They team up, but then things get sour. Red Mist befriending Kick Ass actually turned out to be a ploy to bring Kick Ass to John Genovese, who then attempts to kill him & Big Daddy. But instead, John is the one that is killed. This is what begins Red Mists transformation into the Motherfucker.

He assembles an army of villainy through Twitter, marking his arrival as The Motherfucker. He starts making plans, and getting a team together. He wants to kill a lot of people. It’s around this time that I started to genuinely be afraid of this dude. He parades around town, brutally hurts & presumably rapes Kick Ass’s crush Katie, kills her father, and kills multiple children in her neighborhood. It’s an awful scene. It leads up to the Motherfucker having Kick Ass’s father killed, and the battle of good & evil at Time Square.

I could go on & on listing the details of the Motherfucker’s villainy, but I think we can stop at his beginnings. The Motherfucker isn’t really the type of villain that people like. Unlike someone like Joker, whom people enjoy as a character, the Motherfucker is a truly terrifying bad guy who doesn’t leave a lot to be liked. In the movies, he’s portrayed a bit differently, with much more humor applied to him. Though I don’t like this, it makes sense. I think they kind of had to change him around in order to avoid his brutal & graphic truth. They also kill his mother in the movies, which upset me. I think they did this to try to give him more motive, to try to better explain the coming of his villainy. I don’t think this was necessary at all.

There’s a lot of villain’s that are spooky, and that I genuinely like as characters. I enjoy there badness. But the Motherfucker is a seriously scary guy, revenge seeking & brutal, who I can’t appreciate. So, I guess he really does his job as a villain.
