Fangirls, I thought I would hate this. I was wrong.
For those of you who aren’t aware, Into The Woods is a musical by Stephen Sondheim, originally released in 1987. It was phenomenal, and touched on rape topics. On a much more pleasant note, it was also the first time rap was used in a musical. Having been such a big fan of the original stage production, I expected to hate the movie. But they did a pretty good job.
Into The Woods follows five stories; Red Riding Hood, Cinderella, Jack and the Beanstalk, Rapunzel, and are all connected by a baker and his wife. The baker and his wife are told (by their neighbor, a witch) that the only way to reverse a curse that she put on their family is to collect four items: the cow as white as milk, the cape as blood, the hair as yellow as corn, and the slipper as pure as gold. So the baker and his wife must get these items from the other stories.
It takes them almost all of their allotted time to gather the items, and on the way people are hurt, wolves are killed, and it’s not as easy as they expect. Everyone learns to be careful what they wish for; you never know what will happen. It’s a great story and moral.
I have seen some people upset about Johnny Depp’s character, the Wolf. He sings a song called “Hello, Little Girl” to Red Riding Hood. In it, it sounds like he just wants to eat her, but it’s about rape. I’ve read a couple people’s complaints that he’s too creepy and much of a pedophile, and he is, but that’s the idea. It’s a warning; stay on the path, listen to your mother, and don’t listen to wolves. And as creepy as Johnny Depp’s Wolf is, he’s nothing compared to the original costume, which was complete with genitalia.
I enjoyed the movie. My biggest complaint is that they didn’t keep one of my favorite songs, Agony Reprise. In the first Agony, the Princes Charming lament how tough life is because they can’t have the maidens they want. In the Reprise, they lament new maidens they’ve found, and end with “well back to my wife,” and I think that’s a great way to show what they’re like as people. It’s very dramatic, and hilarious. So I was really quite upset when it didn’t happen. But don’t worry, Fangirls, I’ve got your back.
So if you’ve got the time, first go to youtube and watch Into The Woods, the original musical with Bernadette Peters, then go see Disney’s version. Both are very good, but everyone should see the original first.
