Do Fairies Have Tails: “Fairy Tail” Anime & Manga

Lucy Heartfilia, a young celestial wizard, wants to join the most legendary wizard guild: Fairy Tail. When Lucy meets Natsu Dragneel, a fire wizard from Fairy Tail, she gets her wish but Fairy Tail turns out to be quite different from what she expects.  While the members of Fairy Tail are as legendary as the tales say, they are also quirky, eccentric and whimsical.

Fairy Tail” is a manga (comic) written and illustrated by Hiro Mashima. The manga started in 2006 and the anime in 2009. Because this story has  become popular in the last two or three years, it is easy to come across people who either hate it or love it.

If you are looking for a realistic battle manga/anime, this story is probably not for you. While there are many battles and adventures, the focus of this manga/anime is not on the fighting. Rather it is a story about nakama (friends), and the feels. One of my favorite things about Hiro Mashima’s writing is how he makes me go from laughing to crying in the space of a few minutes.

Depending on who you are, you will be either happy or unhappy about the fan service. Both the men and women are used for fan service so there is something for everyone. But at the same time, the show/story is not over run by the fan service. Both the male and female characters are well made. The females aren’t just there for fan service and are actually just as strong as the guys.

The anime is, overall, consistent with the manga. However there are filler episodes and filler story arcs that aren’t really worth watching. While there are a few that are OK, the quality of the filler stories are generally very low.

The show/story takes a little while to get going but if you can get passed the slow start and some of the inconsistencies. I think it is definitely worth a read/watch.
