Music: “No Way Out” // Warpaint

packshotIt’s hard to believe I’ve waited over a month to talk about this song. I suppose I was waiting for the dust to settle in my brain, because this is one of the best songs I’ve ever heard. I know to expect out of this world music from Warpaint, but how damn good this song is really blindsided me. After listening to it just about every day for the last month, I think I’m ready to express my thoughts on “No Way Out.”

It’s such a beautifully, and perfectly crafted song. It’s so dynamic, flowing effortlessly from one part to another. It stretches at over seven minutes, and every second is a goddamn masterpiece. It eases you into things, starting with those lovely piece-y signature Warpaint guitar riffing. A softer, more electric sounding percussion eventually erupts into a more pounding beat at more lush vocals come in. The song continues to ebb and flow in unimaginable ways, real thumping & intense at times, then falling into small interludes of slow & steady beats & ambient guitar.Warpaint_MiaKirby_2The song is so dynamic and well constructed, its honestly hard to grasp. Not in a bad way, of course. It’s just so captivating, it leaves me in awe every time. As the track moves from section to section, I find myself feeling this pulsing, electric feeling. It’s just so good. I like to think I’m not too bad at translating the sound or feeling of a song for articles like this, but “No Way Out” leaves me practically dumbfounded. It’s not often that I hear a song this good, this powerful in it’s music alone. These women are absolutely some of the most talented people making music right now. This song is a perfect example of what they are capable of. It makes me nearly pee my pants with excitement for whatever else they have in store for the future. I don’t know if I’ll even ever speak again after those songs.

If you’re not already deep in the throes of an intense love affair with Warpaint, I encourage you to do so. Start with this song. It’s a perfect portrait of the astounding music these women make. Did I mention that this song is good?
