Jem & the Holograms Trailer Review

487209e20bbf1ddb20b130f0608590d4With the new comic, and the movie announcement, everything has been coming up Jem, Fangirls. And I’ve been loving it; until now. I didn’t know what to expect from the new movie, but surely, it was not this.

This looks god awful. I mean, really, really bad. Truly outrageous; in the worst way imaginable. It’s as if they wrote a completely new movie, but just kept the names of the characters and the title. Everything seems different. Where is Synergy? Where are the Misfits? Jem gets YouTube famous??

T8DJEAN EC002From the trailer, this is what Jem has become; Jerrica lives with her sister Kimber at their Aunt’s house, with her two foster daughters. As you might have guessed, they become Jem & the Holograms. However, not in the way we all know and love. Kimber takes a video of Jerrica singing, and posts it to YouTube without her knowing. The video quickly becomes viral, and Jerrica is eventually told about her new online fame. A record company asks to sign Jerrica & her sisters, and bam. They’re famous. But eventually, the pains of fame set in relationships are tested, blah blah. We learn this all as One Direction plays in the background.

What the fuck is this. Even if I wasn’t a fan of the original Jem, hoping to get some representation, this looks like a terrible movie. I’ll be surprised if it even reaches the theaters, this looks like a straight to DVD catastrophe. They’ve cut me deep, Fangirls. Synergy is nowhere to be found, since the girls just become a band on their own. The Misfits are also not at all a thing, since the conflicts have all stemmed from emotional turmoil, rather than Pizzazz, Roxy, Stormer, and Jetta raising hell out of jealousy. The music of the band is notably different, which I did expect. I was hoping, however, that they would still use the old Jem songs, just rework them. It’s hard to tell what they’ll do with the music, but my hopes aren’t

Everything is different, everything is wrong, they’ve ruined Jem for the younger generations who had the potential to adore her. I was hoping that this would be a great new dawning of Jem, and something that older & newer generations could love again, together. Boy, was I wrong. They’ve totally broken something that didn’t need fixing. I’ll stick to my old Jem, thank you very much.
But I’ll be honest, Fangirls. I’ll probably still go see it.
