Power Up by Kate Leth & Matt Cummings

Fangirls, Boom! Studios is absolutely killing it recently. They extended Lumberjanes and now Giant Days, and released this beauty from Kate Leth and Matt Cummings last week, and it’s amazing. Everything is so great, and I am falling in love with everything they do.

Power Up issue one came out last Wednesday, and is an introductory issue to a comic that looks like it’s going to be beyond fantastic. Amie is a rad lady who seems pretty normal, but one day at work she blows up a fish tank with her stomach, and a weird looking alien dude attacks her! She goes on TV to explain the “robbery” and some people watching (who she interacted with briefly that day), both get looks in their eyes like they know what she’s going through.

The issue ends there, it’s just the first of six (hopefully it’ll get extended), but it gives some really amazing lead in. And from the looks of it, there’s a lot to get excited about. Amie, who looks like the leader, is a woman of color whose body is not stick thin. Hell yeah. The construction worker she sees that day is on the cover in what looks like a magical girl outfit; complete with skirt. And he is rocking it, Fangirls. And the mother Amie helped at the pet store seems like she has super strength; she broke the handle off of her fridge!

All of this makes me really excited to read more of Power Up; these characters seem ready to save the galaxy, and I’m so ready to read about it. Go pick up Power Up #1 from your local comic shop, and put it on your pull list, because this bad boy is going to end up being hard to find.
