Nerds Gotta Eat: Healthy Grubbin’

IMG_4689Over the last few months, I’ve felt a lot more like Killer Croc than Wonder Woman, Fangirls. My weight has never bothered me much, my only concern has always just been eating healthy. Over the last year or so, though, I started to get in the habit of slipping up on my usual healthy ways. So, I’ve overhauled my snack drawer, and filled my fridge with goodies fit for a Amazonian babe. However, it’s certainly not always easy, fast, or cheap to eat healthy. But I’ve hacked my way into a lifestyle of healthy, simple eating.

Mainly, I focus on the snacking side of things. That’s where most people, including me, really have their downfall when it comes to sticking to a healthy diet. Luckily, I have an arsenal of healthy snacks and treats that work wonderfully for me and my taste buds.

When you have a vicious sweet tooth like me, it’s tough to keep it satisfied when trying to eat right. Fruit is a perfect solution. When I’m howling for something sweet to satisfy me, I’m starting to find it easier and easier to reach for a piece of fruit instead. A handful of sweet cherries, a few ripe strawberries. Sometimes, you need to kick it up a notch though. Enter the chocolate chip raspberry. Get a serving of ripe, red raspberries, and pop a dark chocolate chip into that lovely little natural cave it’s got going on. Eat them just like that, or pop them into the freezer to enjoy a little something sweet & cold on a hot day. Super yum.

Speaking of frozen sweet treats, a few weeks ago I talked about these little homemade popsicles that have been filling my need for something sugary and cold. Just three or four ingredients and you’re on your way to frozen goodness. Milk, honey, and a fruit of your choosing is all you need to get to heaven. They’ve got endless possibilities, and in minutes I’ve whipped up kinds like mango, raspberries with chocolate, and nectarine creamsicles (definitely my favorite!)IMG_4687Time for a seriously classic healthy snack. If you haven’t jumped on the Ants on a Log band wagon; Welcome to goodness. This is such a simple snack that is packed with all sorts of nutrition. People think that this snack is boring, but they couldn’t be more wrong. Bored with the plain ol’ peanut butter and regular raisins? Try using crunchy peanut butter, almond butter, or a flavored peanut butter if they don’t get too sugary. Instead of the standard raisin, try using golden raisins, or other dried fruit like cranberries or blueberries, or leave dried fruit behind and add something more fresh like diced apple. Sprinkle on some cinnamon or cocoa powder. Your days of boring Ants on a Log are over, Fangirl.

When it comes to eating well, protein is your closest friend. That’s not saying you need to eat a big, lean steak every other day of the week. Protein can be found in a lot more than IMG_4688just meat, and for people like me who aren’t the biggest meat eaters, that’s music to my ears. Nuts and beans are probably my biggest source of protein. Beans are a beautiful, versatile thing that I add to all different kinds of skillets, stir fry, and salads. I even use them as a snack. Take a can of garbanzo beans, also known as chick peas, drain them, and coat them with a little olive oil, and seasoning of your desire. Place them in an oven for about 30 minutes at 400 degrees, and you’ve got a toasty, crunchy snack. They’re perfect for replacing deadly salty snacks. Plus, you can season them with all sorts of things. I’ve made chickpeas with curry, spicy chipotle powder, or herby mixes with basil or oregano. Seriously, they’re just perfect. While I’m at it roasting away in the oven, almonds are a Fangirls best friend. Like the chickpeas, almonds, or any nuts, are easy to flavor with all sorts of seasonings. Personally, the cocoa roasted route is my personal favorite. Toss them with a little honey and cocoa powder, and roast them at 275. Bam. A sweet and protein packed snack.

Eating healthy is more than snacking right, but it’s certainly a start, Fangirls. Swapping IMG_4651out this for that is a surefire way to lead your body to the promise land of kicking ass like Captain Marvel or Kate Bishop. The best thing I ever did was switch out the butter on my morning English muffin for heaven-sent avocado. Superheroines don’t kick so much butt by just laying around and eating junk. Getting healthy is a daunting world, but once you get yourself on track, it’s so damn rewarding. And fucking delicious.

Happy snacking!
