Steven Universe Volume One

Fangirls, Steven Universe has taken over every aspect of my life, and I couldn’t be happier. First the show, then the music, and now, finally, the comic. I’m in love with all of the characters, along with the silly, yet incredible poignance of the show. I’m on my third rematch of the series, I listen to the music constantly, and I even spent a solid amount of time making canary of the characters in the series, so it was definitely time for me to read the comic.

I picked up Volume One of the comic a couple weeks back at Earthworld, and have since read it several times. It’s freaking adorable, Fangirls. It really embraces the silliness of the TV show, with getting into the heavy emotional stuff that goes down on TV. I kind of appreciated the almost exclusive amount of silliness in the book, because it gave me a window into Steven’s life that wasn’t so difficult to deal with.

The show makes me really emotional. There are episodes I have seen more times than I can count on both hands because I have issues wrapping my head around the ideas in some of them. Garnet getting so frustrated or scared that she breaks apart is always really hard for me to watch; I love how loving she is, and it kills me to see her literally fall apart. I need to watch the episodes where that happens a lot, because I just can’t wrap my head around it.

But the comic is fun! It’s lighthearted and silly, and everyone seems to get along pretty well. Just about the full cast is in it (I didn’t see Mayor Dewey, but I honestly didn’t miss him), and it feels like it fills in the blank space between episodes. The art is beyond adorable, with stories from several different artists (and writers). The one thing I wasn’t a huge fan of, though, was the lettering; it’s a bit all over the place. I think I would be more attracted to it if each character had slightly different fonts for their speech.

All in all, it’s fantastic. It’s a bunch of random stories, so you can pick it up at any point, or take breaks to watch the show. Regardless, it’s amazing and you should read it.
