Nerds Gotta Eat: Fad Diets

Fangirls, I was going to make a Steven Universe snack for today, but I had a really bad self esteem day yesterday, and spent a lot of time drinking a Bolthouse drink instead of eating. And when it came time to eat, I ended up eating crap food. The Bolthouse drink got me thinking about fad diets, though, and a conversation my mother and I had a week or so ago.

cleanse

Fad diets are diets that go in and out of style. The past couple of years, juice cleanses have been huge. Juice cleanses are when you don’t invest anything other than juice and water. This was showcased a bit in Mean Girls. In early college, I tried a juice cleanse twice. The first time I lasted three days before I needed food, and the second time I blacked out in the shower on the second day. Juice cleanses tend not to be successful, as most of the juices that are readily available to us are more sugar than juice; so even if you drink all of it in a day, you’re maybe getting two servings of fruit. And your body can’t live off of that.

Liquid diets are popular in other ways too. Meal replacement drinks are incredibly popular, because they’re thought to be quick and easy, and cheaper than buying lunch every day. But your body doesn’t get that. The way we’ve always taken in nutrients, is by chewing them, and a liquid diet makes that difficult. Your brain will tell you that even though your tummy is full of chalky, nutrient filled drink, that you’re still hungry, because you didn’t chew anything. Many people don’t lose weight on liquid diets, because they’re still getting a meal after they drink their meal.

Unlike Regina, there’s a whole lot more than 3 pounds that I’d like to lose.

Drinking Bolthouses makes me think that I could live off of them. Each big bottle has all of the fruits and veggies you need a day in them, so if you drink it through out the day, you’ll be full (because holy cow, are they filling), and you’ll have your fruits and veggies. But what about the chewing? Protein bars. Protein bars (1 or 2 throughout the day), will help you to not pass out in the shower, keep you motivated, and you have to chew them. Also, ice is a great way to get the chewing (but protein is a necessity, no ifs, ands, or buts).

bolthouse

It might be expensive, though, and I don’t know how it’s going to affect my mood or energy levels, so I think I’m going to try it out when I’m in Maryland in a couple weeks. I’ll get myself 7 Bolthouse beverages, some ice, and a box or two of protein bars, and see how it goes. In Maryland, I know that I won’t have to go to work, or do all that much movement, so it’ll be a safe way to test it out. I do not, however, advise anyone else to do it. It’s a fad diet, and I’m considering it solely because I feel like it’s a smarter juice cleanse.

When drinking Bolthouse drinks, there is something to keep in mind: they make you poop. For the most part, our bodies aren’t used to taking in as many fruits and veggies as we’re supposed to have. Also, fruits and veggies make you poop. It’s how bodies work. So I’m going to try it, and see how it goes. I’m guessing the cost will be around $50, and I know there are a couple days when I’ll be going out to eat as well. I plan on writing about it, so I can share it with all of you.

For protein or healthy bars, I recommend Luna Bars. They’re healthy and delicious, which is the best combo. And Bolthouses are fabulous, I’m always stocked up.
