Fangirls, I like video games a whole bunch. I’ve always really liked the idea of playing any of the Ratchet and Clank games, but I’ve never had the time to play through them. Last week, I was in Maryland on vacation, and it just so happens that my boy has a PS3 and some Ratchet and Clank games. So one of the days he was at work, I grabbed a bottle of water, charged up the controller, and started playing Into the Nexus.
Growing up I played a lot of Jak and Daxter, and expected RaC to be very similar. I was right about that, except RaC is waaaaaay better. I feel like it’s the good version of Jak and Daxter; the sidekick is polite, the women aren’t over sexualized, the gameplay is much sillier, and it’s an altogether happier game.
Into the Nexus follows Ratchet and Clank as they have to defeat Vendra and Neftin Prog. When the Progs open a dimensional rift that brings Vendra’s childhood “friend,” Mr Eye into our dimension, she finds out that he wasn’t really her friend, and ends up kidnapped. Now the villain Neftin has to work with heroes Ratchet and Clank to get his sister back.
The game is really interesting. I loved seeing Neftin just throw everything on the line for his sister (who is a super controlling jerk), and then agree for both of them to go to jail, and work with heroes. The monstrous bad guys that you fight with Neftin are really interesting looking, and the weapons you get to use are similarly bizarre. It’s a beautiful game, pairing black with purple and pink throughout, and overall, it’s just really nice to look at.
I played through on Cadet, which is the easy mode. I beat it in just under 6 hours, and really enjoyed it the whole time. I do prefer to play games that I can power through to games that take 5 years to play. Into the Nexus was perfect for me in this respect, because now that I understand how the story goes, and the controls (and have played through on easy mode), I can go back in one of the more difficult settings, and be aware of what I’m getting into.
Though Ratchet and Clank: Into the Nexus is a game that came out almost two years ago, it’s still really enjoyable, and I highly recommend it to anyone.
