Fangirls, I first picked up giant days when it originally came out January 2015, read a couple issues, then didn’t pay it much attention. It’s a Boom! Box book, originally only going to be 6 issues long, but extended it after issue 3. It’s a wonderful comic, about three roomies in college, trying to function and figure things out.
I reread the first couple issues the other day, and then got the rest on Comixology, digitally. While reading the series, I felt a huge wave of camaraderie between myself and all three of the roommates. Susan is the sensible, realistic one, Daisy is the naïveté who really finds herself, and Esther is the self declared “sexy idiot.” It’s quite the band of misfits, but it’s wonderful to identify with all of them.
The comic follows them through their first year at university, and the trials that come with it. Sex, love, school papers, exams, and the future are all a huge part of Giant Days. And though some of those things are difficult to discuss, Giant Days does it perfectly. I remember feeling like Esther; making bad decisions for the hell of it. Being like Daisy and not understanding things like sexuality so just mushing faces with a friend to try to figure myself out. And just like Susan, I often find that sleep is less important than many other things.
Giant Days is written by John Allison, illustrated by Max Sarin, and colored by Whitney Cogar. Though it kind of bums me out that 2/3 of the crew are men, writing 3 females, I think they did an absolutely marvelous job. I can not wait to read the follow up series, Giant Days: Year One. I highly recommend Giant Days to every last one of you, Fangirls, as it is perfect in every way, highly relatable, and an all around good time.
