I read and adored Light as a Feather by Zoe Aarsen. I thought it was an incredibly fun take on a children’s game-turned-horror-story. It was a bit silly, in a dark way, and I really enjoyed it. And I bought it because I saw that it was a Hulu series.
I watched the series in just a day a couple weeks after finishing the book. I think it was done in an odd way, but I still enjoyed it. The main plot is that when one girl plays the storyteller in Light as a Feather, Stiff as a Board, the stories she tells about the person’s death come true. It becomes a test of survival and a bit of a witch hunt…at least in the book.
The show followed a similar basic plot, but there was a point when things veered completely off the rails. That being said, I loved it so much! I think it was similar enough to be associated with the book, but I can take both of them separately. My boyfriend was watching with me, and asking me “is this how it happened in the book?” and the answer was usually no.
I did enjoy the differences, especially since it sounds like there is going to be another season. The main difference between the book and show is in the reason for Violet’s storytelling truths; ghosts vs a curse. I think if you take that grain of salt with it, they make for two separate and wonderful stories.
If you like basic teen drama/horror, check this out. There wasn’t much for jump-scares, which I really appreciated. I had a blast watching it, and I think you can enjoy it whether or not you’ve read the book!
